President Bola Tinubu has issued a stark warning about the rising tide of corruption within public institutions, urging officials across all levels of government to recommit themselves to integrity, accountability and national service.
Speaking at the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service (NEAPS) held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja on Sunday, the president — represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume — said the corrosive effects of corruption are becoming more evident, not only in Nigeria but across the world.
Tinubu noted that entrenched behaviours such as nepotism, cronyism, political patronage and persistent lapses in accountability continue to sabotage effective public service delivery. He stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to allow practices that weaken institutions or erode public trust to continue unchecked.
Describing public service as a “sacred trust”, the president reminded officeholders that their roles demand responsibility, patriotism and the courage to innovate in addressing national challenges. He urged them to leave “footprints on the sands of time” by demonstrating exemplary conduct.
The president also commended the organisers of NEAPS for maintaining a credible and transparent process driven by the private sector, highlighting that this year’s honourees — 50 individuals drawn from various sectors — were selected strictly on merit.
Tinubu said the awards serve both as recognition of excellence and a call to even greater service.
“This award is a validation of your efforts and a motivation to continue working towards a better Nigeria,” he said, thanking the recipients for their contributions to governance and national development.
