President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua (AJ) following a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), the president described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has cast “a deep shadow on this season,” while extending condolences to Joshua and his family.
Tinubu praised Joshua’s character and contributions to the nation, noting that the boxer has consistently demonstrated courage, discipline and an unwavering love for Nigeria, qualities he said have made him a source of national pride.
The president urged Nigerians to show unity and mutual support during difficult moments, encouraging citizens to stand together “as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”
He also offered prayers for Joshua’s recovery and for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the accident.
“I pray for strength, wisdom and grace for you during this painful period,” Tinubu said, while wishing the injured sportsman a speedy recovery.
The accident occurred on Monday around 11 a.m. near the Sagamu Interchange in Ogun State, when the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was travelling collided with a stationary truck on the busy highway.
Preliminary reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that two occupants died at the scene, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital, with other occupants surviving with varying degrees of injuries.
