Vice-President Kashim Shettima has restated the resolve of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to safeguard and uphold Nigeria’s traditional institutions, describing them as irreplaceable pillars of society.
Speaking on Friday at events marking the 45th anniversary of the Emir of Gumel, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Sani II, and the commissioning of the new Gumel Central Mosque, the vice-president emphasised that traditional rulers remain the closest leaders to the grassroots.
Shettima noted that while political office holders serve limited terms, traditional institutions endure across generations.
“We must respect them, take care of them, and ensure their preservation and protection,” he said.
The vice-president congratulated the Emir for attaining 45 years on the throne, praying for his continued health and long reign. He highlighted the emirate’s rich history, noting that the current Emir is the 13th ruler of the ancient kingdom founded in 1750.
He also praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, describing him as a “symbol of unity” whose leadership continues to build harmony across the country.
During the event, Shettima commended Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi for cultivating 10,000 hectares of wheat, a figure he said surpasses the combined output of 18 northern states.
“We are mightily proud of you. May Allah continue to strengthen our unity,” he said.
Governor Namadi, in his remarks, thanked the vice-president for honouring the emirate’s invitation and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to development and partnership with the federal government.
