The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged elderly Nigerians to remain healthy, active and purposeful, stressing the importance of finding joy and fulfilment in old age.
She gave the charge on Tuesday in Abuja at the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Elderly Support Scheme, organised to celebrate and support senior citizens, particularly military and police veterans.
Speaking at the event, the first lady said the programme has become a tradition under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour Nigerians whose years of service contributed to nation-building and collective progress.
“As we approach the festive season, it is crucial to prioritise our elderly citizens. They have walked difficult paths so that younger generations may have smoother roads to travel,” she said, adding that senior citizens deserve to live their later years in comfort, good health and dignity.
Mrs Tinubu encouraged the elderly to seek joy in community, compassion and service, noting that ageing gracefully goes beyond longevity to being surrounded by love, care and respect. She also urged those who are able to remain physically active and mentally engaged, including through charitable work.
The first lady disclosed that the scheme is supporting 250 vulnerable veterans aged 65 years and above, with each beneficiary receiving ₦200,000. She said the intervention, estimated at about ₦1 billion nationwide, is aimed at ensuring that elderly veterans live their twilight years with dignity, purpose and a sense of belonging.
In addition to the cash support, food items were distributed to beneficiaries, while free medical checks were provided during the event.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, the Director of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Adepegba, commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for its social investment programmes targeted at defence and police veterans. He said the intervention reflects the nation’s appreciation of their selflessness and dedication to service.
