The national electricity grid collapsed on Monday, triggering a sharp drop in power supply across the country.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that electricity generation plunged from 2,052.37 megawatts (MW) to 139.92MW between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
NISO disclosed that only three of the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) were able to load a combined total of 120MW during the period.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) accounted for the highest load with 80MW, while the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company each received 20MW.
All other DisCos—including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola—recorded zero allocation following the grid collapse.
The development resulted in widespread power outages across several parts of the country.
