The senate has confirmed three non-career ambassadorial nominees submitted to the upper legislative chamber by President Bola Tinubu two weeks ago.
Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are of Ogun, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu of Jigawa, and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke of Oyo were all confirmed by the senate as non-career ambassadorial nominees.
The confirmation, which took place on Tuesday in Abuja, followed the consideration of the report of the senate committee on foreign affairs.
The committee noted that the nominees possessed the required qualifications, experience, conduct and character to represent Nigeria abroad.
They added that the three nominees also demonstrated an understanding of international diplomacy during their screening.
The trio were the first set of ambassadorial nominees forwarded to the senate by the president.
A further 64 nominees, comprising career and non-career ambassadors, are still awaiting confirmation.
Tinubu forwarded the names of three non-career ambassadorial nominees to the senate for confirmation on November 26.
It was the first batch of ambassadorial nominees sent to the senate since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.
The president subsequently nominated 32 additional individuals for ambassadorial positions.
The list includes Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former governor of Enugu state; Mahmood Yakubu, immediate past chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); Femi Fani-Kayode, former minister; and Reno Omokri, former presidential aide.
Other nominees include Okezie Ikpeazu, former governor of Abia state, and Femi Pedro, former deputy governor of Lagos state, among others.
