Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of Mudasiru Obasa, speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been sworn in as chairman of Agege local government.

The ceremony, which also featured the swearing-in of Toyin Adejimiwa as permanent secretary, took place at Lagos House in Ikeja.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State governor, who swore in Obasa, charged him to focus on grassroots development and align with the state’s policy direction.

Obasa had previously served as acting chairman before his confirmation.

Sanwo-Olu said local government remains the closest tier to the people and requires leadership that is visible, responsive and humane.

He urged the Agege council chairman to run an inclusive administration, steer clear of division and prioritise results-driven governance.

The governor said discipline and performance continue to define leadership standards and career progression in Lagos State.

The Lagos State governor also acknowledged retired permanent secretaries at the event, describing them as role models whose service records still shape the civil service.

He congratulated Adejimiwa and Obasa on behalf of the Lagos State government and residents.

The governor expressed confidence that both appointees would justify the trust placed in them and contribute to the state’s development.

In separate remarks, Adejimiwa and Obasa thanked the governor for the trust reposed in them.

They pledged to uphold the principles, values and service standards of the Lagos State public service.

Obasa’s confirmation followed the resignation of Tunde Azeez, former Agege council chairman, due to prolonged health challenges.

The resignation letter was read during plenary at the Agege Council Chamber.

Councillors subsequently confirmed Obasa unanimously after his period as acting chairman.

Obasa had earlier shown interest in contesting the chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections.

His ambition was initially halted following opposition to his candidacy.
