The Labour Party (LP) has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his decision to embark on a European holiday despite the widespread insecurity affecting the nation.
Tinubu departed Lagos for Europe on Sunday as part of his end-of-year break.
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, said Tinubu will also participate in the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) summit, which will take place in the emirate in early January.
Reacting in a statement, Nenadi Usman, acting national chairman of the party, said the president’s trip reflects a lack of compassion and awareness of the harsh realities confronting citizens affected by violent attacks and humanitarian emergencies.
Usman insisted that the nation’s leader should remain at home to personally oversee security operations and provide direction at such a critical time.
“This is the most inauspicious time for the President to leave the country. Even the Christmas holiday in Lagos seems ill-timed, given that a bomb exploded in Zamfara today, killing nine people,” Usman said.
According to her, Nigeria is under foreign aggression, and she accused the authorities of attempting to minimise the gravity of the threat.
Usman further claimed that the president has failed to convene vital security briefings since the U.S.-led bombardment of terrorist enclaves in Kwara and Sokoto states and criticised what she described as an absence of visible coordination with the military hierarchy.
The journey comes at a time when security fears continue to escalate across the country.
