Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, the minister conveyed his decision in a letter dated December 1, citing health reasons for his resignation.
President Tinubu has accepted Abubakar’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation. The President is expected to communicate the name of his successor to the Senate later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as Governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.
His resignation comes at a time when the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details on its scope expected to be announced in due course.
