The approval was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary after lawmakers considered the request in the Committee of the Whole, in line with Section 5, Part II of the Constitution.
The senators unanimously voted in favour of the deployment, providing the required legislative backing for the regional security intervention.
Akpabio described the decision as timely and necessary, stressing that instability in any neighbouring country poses a direct threat to regional security.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” he said, underscoring Nigeria’s responsibility to support its partners within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He added that the Senate’s resolution would be transmitted to President Tinubu immediately.
President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate, seeking approval for the deployment of troops to Benin Republic, citing Nigeria’s historical obligation to assist the country under existing ECOWAS security frameworks.
According to the President, the situation in Benin requires urgent external intervention to restore stability and prevent a further breakdown of law and order.
