Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday departed Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for 22–23 November.
The vice president’s trip follows President Tinubu’s decision to remain in Nigeria to monitor and receive further briefings on recent security incidents in Kebbi and Kwara States. The president had initially been slated to attend the summit but opted to postpone his travel due to emerging security concerns.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently serves as President of the G20 group, had extended an invitation to President Tinubu to participate in this year’s gathering. The summit, taking place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, is expected to bring together leaders from the world’s major economies, the European Union, the African Union, and key international financial institutions.
Vice President Shettima is expected to return to the country at the conclusion of the summit engagements.
