Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday returned to Abuja after a series of high-profile engagements in South Africa and Angola, where he represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at major international summits.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).
Shettima first attended the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, where he delivered President Tinubu’s address calling for a more equitable and responsive global financial system.
The president, in his speech read by the vice president, urged world leaders to overhaul outdated multilateral frameworks and establish mechanisms that genuinely address recurring global debt crises. He also advocated global ethical standards on Artificial Intelligence to support development efforts worldwide.
From South Africa, the Vice President proceeded to Luanda for the 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Summit. There, he presented Tinubu’s renewed demand for Africa to receive permanent, veto-wielding seats on the United Nations Security Council, saying meaningful global governance reform is long overdue.
Tinubu’s message at the summit called on the European Union to work with African partners in co-creating peace and security frameworks driven by African-led initiatives, which he said are essential to achieving long-term stability on the continent.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting peace and security across Africa, and partnering with the EU to build a more just and prosperous global order.
