Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Belém, Brazil, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30). The global summit is taking place in the capital of Pará State, deep within the Brazilian Amazon.
Hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in partnership with international organizations, COP30 brings together world leaders, development partners, and private sector representatives under the theme “Climate Action and Implementation.” The conference focuses on key issues such as adaptation, forests, biodiversity, and climate justice.
Vice President Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the general plenary of leaders, highlighting the country’s commitment to global climate action. He will also participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund and join a high-level roundtable on climate and nature chaired by President Lula. Later in the evening, he will attend a special Amazonian cocktail reception for heads of delegation, hosted by the Brazilian leader.
This year’s summit marks a decade since the landmark Paris Agreement, with renewed global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. Discussions at COP30 are also expected to push for a scale-up of climate finance, targeting $1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to support developing nations in meeting their climate goals.
