President Bola Tinubu on Monday emphasised the importance of secure borders, transparent systems, and predictable trade rules as pillars for Africa’s economic transformation.
The president made the remarks in a post on X during the launch of the Customs PACT – the Partnership for African Cooperation in Trade – hosted by the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja.
Addressing participants from the World Customs Organisation, Afreximbank, the AfCFTA Secretariat, more than 30 African customs administrations, and key public- and private-sector institutions, Tinubu said the continent’s shared mission is clear and urgent.
“Our task is a serious one. Strong nations and a strong Africa will be built on secure borders and fair systems,” he said, adding that growth depends on “clear, predictable, and consistent rules.” He noted that businesses prosper when honesty is encouraged and trade is free of unnecessary obstacles, while people thrive when confidence replaces uncertainty.
Tinubu highlighted expanded intra-African trade as a major driver capable of unlocking the continent’s latent economic potential. The event’s theme, “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges,” reflects this focus on deepening cooperation and removing barriers that hinder legitimate commerce across borders.
As delegates gather in Abuja throughout the week, the president reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening partnerships that protect the economy, support traders, and lay foundations for sustainable continental growth.
“We will lead with clarity. We will lead with purpose,” he said. “We will play our part and continue to build the bridges that secure a more connected and prosperous African future.”
