The House approved the resolution during Tuesday’s plenary after the passage of a motion proposed by Kingsley Chinda, the minority leader.
On Tuesday, indigenous contractors demonstrated at the national parliament due to the non-payments for completed projects, prompting security personnel to secure the main entrance.
The development necessitated that personnel and visitors utilise the entrance designated for the secretary to the government of the federation, leading to significant congestion in the vicinity.
According to a report by The Cable, the contractors have been protesting for several months at multiple ministries, including the ministries of finance and works.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu had conducted multiple meetings with the contractors to address the issue, and the minister of finance, Mr Wale Edun, had promised to settle the contractors’ outstanding payments.
Chinda, who stated that the contractors have not been paid for the work finished in 2024, added that Mr Wale Edun was told to “immediately pay the local contractors” by President Bola Tinubu at a meeting with the house leadership.
He asked the house to give the federal government seven days to pay the contractors.
Deputy Speaker Kalu put the motion to a voice vote, and it was approved unanimously. The House subsequently adjourned for a week after a motion to that effect supported by lawmakers.
