The Chief Security Adviser for the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in Nigeria, Mr. Senyo Kufe, has visited the headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF), North East Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of his nationwide familiarization and operational assessment tour.
During the visit, Mr. Kufe, who assumed office in August 2025, described the North East as the “engine room” of Nigeria’s security architecture, emphasizing the region’s crucial role in national stability and humanitarian operations.
He commended the Nigerian military for its professionalism and continued support to UN safety and security operations, saying the visit provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the UNDSS and the Theatre Command.
“This visit gives me a firsthand understanding of the security dynamics in the North East. Without the military’s support, UN staff cannot safely operate in this region,” Kufe stated.
Accompanying the Chief Security Adviser, Mr. Udit Mehta, the UNDSS Area Security Adviser and Field Coordination Officer for the North East, also expressed appreciation to the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, for his leadership and sustained partnership. He said the visit was aimed at deepening cooperation to ensure the safety of UN personnel and humanitarian workers operating in the region.
Responding, Major General Abubakar reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Hadin Kai to supporting the UN in achieving its mandate in the North East. He highlighted ongoing military operations and rescue efforts, stressing the importance of continued civil-military collaboration.
“We value our partnership with the United Nations and other international stakeholders. Strengthening coordination, information sharing, and joint training will enhance our collective ability to manage risks and respond to emergencies,” the Theatre Commander said.
Discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in emergency preparedness, disaster response, security management, and joint training for operational safety and risk reduction.
