The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a N550 million lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and 10 medical practitioners, accusing them of issuing a falsified medical report against him.
The development was disclosed on Friday by one of Kanu’s lawyers, Barrister Maxwell Opara, in a video posted on his Facebook page.
“This is FCT High Court, Abuja. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has filed a N550 million suit against the Nigerian Medical Association and the 10 medical doctors that conspired and issued a fake medical report against him,” Opara said.
Recall on October 2025 that Kanu’s legal team alleged the NMA fabricated the report without conducting any court-ordered examination.
Kanu’s Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, explained that the report, dated October 13, was presented in court long after the directive, leaving the defence no time to respond. “That medical report we were served in open court today was dated October 13. This obviously means that the defence has no ample opportunity to react to it. It was more of an ambush,” Ejimakor said.
He further noted that the court had ordered Kanu to be examined by the NMA on September 26, with a restatement on October 8. “That order was never obeyed. They never examined him. That report was based on informal meetings held with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the DSS headquarters on September 18,” he said.
Opara added that the disputed medical report directly influenced the court’s decision to deny Kanu bail. “The court ordered that they should examine Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but they never did that. They went and wrote what they called a medical report, and it was that report that made the court refuse Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s bail,” he said.
The legal team said they had previously written to the NMA and the doctors seeking clarification and accountability but received no response or indication of remorse, prompting the initiation of the lawsuit.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following his return to Nigeria and subsequent trial on charges of terrorism and treasonable felony.
