Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, told Channels TV’s Politics Today on Friday that the delegation is presenting facts, data, and evidence to US authorities, countering claims of government-sponsored persecution of any religious group.
“We are not leaving any space for misinformation to stand. Our officials are in Washington with facts, data, and a clear message, which is that there is no government-sponsored persecution of any religious group in Nigeria,” Idris said.
The delegation has met with the US Secretary of War, members of Congress, officials from the State Department, and other American stakeholders. The meetings included briefings on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, inter-agency security coordination, and measures to protect all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity.
Idris explained that these engagements aim to correct misconceptions amplified during recent congressional discussions and advocacy campaigns. “Our mission is simple. We are showing our partners the full context of the security situation, the steps the government is taking, and the fact that extremists have killed both Christians and Muslims. These narratives of genocide are not only incorrect, they are dangerous,” he said.
He added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has prioritised strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture while expanding international cooperation on counter-terrorism and intelligence operations.
The minister emphasised that the mission reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s reputation and ensuring that foreign partners base decisions on verified information, rather than one-sided narratives. Further follow-up meetings are expected as part of a structured, government-wide response to misinformation.
Idris reassured Nigerians that the government will continue to confront insecurity while engaging the international community to ensure that Nigeria is accurately represented on the global stage, adding that relations with the United States remain strong.
