The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akure Branch, has expressed concern over conflicting judgements being delivered by courts across the country.
Chairman of the branch, Mr Onimisi Umar, raised the concern on Saturday at a news conference ahead of the 2025 Akure Branch Law Week.
“Why we have conflicting decisions, sometimes, it depends on the perspective of the judge. But a lot of guidelines have been set up in recent times by the National Judicial Council.
“Interestingly, we are worried about conflicting decisions and all of that, but it is also not true that those judges do not know the law,” he said.
Umar explained that what is often perceived as conflicting judgments may stem from differences in evidence and case circumstances. He noted that judges decide cases based on facts presented before them, in accordance with established rules of evidence.
He announced that Chief Femi Fani-Kayode would deliver the keynote address on the theme, “Nigeria: Quest for Utilitarian Judiciary and Roles for Stakeholders,” adding that the event would also address judicial independence and electoral reforms.
The chairman said the Dr. Bode Olajumoke Relaxation Centre at the Bar Centre would be inaugurated during the Law Week, where distinguished personalities would also be honoured with awards.
