An Ado-Ekiti-based cleric, Prophet James Omitade, has cautioned that state police may be mismanaged by governors if approved as a solution to Nigeria’s rising insecurity.
The General Overseer of Holy Trinity Authority Prophetic International Church gave the warning during an interaction with journalists in Ado Ekiti, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act swiftly to address insecurity, unemployment, and hunger.
As killings and criminal attacks spread across states, Prophet Omitade blamed the worsening violence on what he described as an entrenched “above the law” culture that shields offenders while innocent Nigerians suffer.
On calls for state police, he agreed the idea could help tackle abductions and killings but insisted that governors must not be given unchecked control over such security structures.
He also urged the President to take firm and decisive steps against those fuelling banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency, warning that public anger could trigger protests similar to the EndSARS uprising.
“I have been saying it for over 14-15 years, even before having a church platform, that the criminal law in Nigeria is not working… Nigeria is now a killing field,” he said, while expressing doubt that governors could responsibly manage state police.
Prophet Omitade further criticised political leaders for pursuing power at all costs, warned against internal sabotage in the fight against terrorism, and insisted that Nigeria can only progress when leaders embrace transparency, accountability and service to the people.
