The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed social media reports claiming that a naval officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, was the target of an assassination attempt at the NNPC Junction along the Kubwa Expressway.
The allegation, shared widely by Instagram blogger Mazitundeednut, suggested that the officer was attacked at the checkpoint.
However, the police, in a statement on Monday, described the claims as entirely false and “grossly misleading.”
According to the statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident in question occurred at about 6:15 p.m. on 16 November 2025, when a police patrol team stopped an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with a concealed number plate and fully tinted windows during a routine stop-and-search operation.
Police officers reportedly approached the vehicle and politely asked the lone occupant for identification and clarification on the concealments. The occupant allegedly refused to identify himself, made several phone calls, and wound up his windows, declining to cooperate with the officers.
A few minutes later, three naval personnel arrived at the checkpoint and identified the driver as their colleague. They also took pictures and videos of the interaction before departing. Once the confirmation was made, the police allowed the vehicle to continue its journey, and the patrol team resumed routine operations without incident.
The Command expressed surprise that the encounter was later framed online as an attempted assassination, describing the narrative as malicious.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers performing their lawful duties and warned against spreading unverified claims capable of causing public fear.
