The announcement followed a media briefing after today’s FCT Executive Committee Meeting, chaired by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), told journalists that the Committee approved the engagement of new contractors for waste collection and management across the FCT. The approval also includes the procurement of basic treatment plants and the operation and maintenance of supervisory utility vehicles.
Chief Obuah noted that the new regime is expected to address long-standing complaints about waste disposal and improve overall sanitation in Abuja.
Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) added that the Committee sanctioned a contract worth N111,913,176 for the emergency evacuation of waste from open dumps, waterways, and streams in Dogon Gada, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
On transport matters, FCT Transportation Secretary Hon. Chinedum Elechi announced that funds have been approved for printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services, the operation and maintenance of 34 existing traffic lights, and the installation of three new traffic lights across the FCT.
Earlier, Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, reiterated Minister Wike’s commitment to environmental cleanliness, emphasizing that the new waste management contract is central to making Abuja a world-class city.
“The Minister is particularly focused on waste management because it directly impacts the cleanliness and image of the city,” Amadi said.
