Academic and media practitioner Dr Akinyemi Rasaq Akanmu Bolaji has raised concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial nominees, cautioning that many on the list lack the diplomatic background required to represent Nigeria effectively.
In an open letter addressed to the President on Sunday, Dr Rasaq questioned the qualifications of nominees such as Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Reno Omokri, former Oyo State First Lady Florence Ajimobi, Femi Fani-Kayode, Victor Okezie Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, among others.
He argued that their limited experience in diplomacy and international relations could hinder Nigeria’s performance on the global stage.
The academic stressed that ambassadorial roles demand individuals who understand diplomacy, international engagement, and Nigeria’s core strategic interests. According to him, the absence of these competencies in several nominees “raises concerns about their ability to effectively represent Nigeria abroad.”
Dr Rasaq urged President Tinubu to pursue a more balanced nomination process, one that blends seasoned career diplomats with other qualified Nigerians who can bring fresh but relevant perspectives to the country’s foreign missions.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s ambassadors play crucial roles in shaping the nation’s image, boosting foreign investment, and strengthening bilateral relations, and should therefore be selected based strictly on merit and expertise.
