The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has congratulated the Executive Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), retired General Mohammed Buba Marwa, on his reappointment for another term. The monarch described the NDLEA chief as a “trailblazer” whose leadership continues to inspire confidence nationwide.
In a statement released through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, on Tuesday, Oba Owoade applauded Marwa’s character and work ethic, noting that he embodies discipline, reliability and strong organisational skills. He said these qualities have consistently defined Marwa’s public service record.
The monarch highlighted Marwa’s role as the Aare Atunluse of Yorubaland, describing him as a meticulous planner who remains focused even in challenging circumstances. He added that the NDLEA chairman is known for setting clear targets and pursuing them with determination, contributing to his successes in governance and administration.
According to the him, Marwa’s integrity distinguishes him in a world where positive role models are increasingly rare. He stated that the NDLEA boss has built a career rooted in honesty and sound judgement, traits that continue to earn him public admiration and trust.
Oba Owoade also reflected on Marwa’s tenure as Military Governor of the old Borno State between 1990 and 1992, a period marked by significant improvements in healthcare, education and agriculture. He noted that Marwa’s administration remained resolute despite cross-border security challenges posed by rogue elements of the Chadian military.
The royal father further recalled Marwa’s time as Military Administrator of Lagos State from 1996 to 1999, describing it as a transformational period. He cited initiatives such as Operation 250 Roads, the upgrading of public health facilities, free malaria treatment, and the establishment of Operation Sweep, which helped curb crime across the state.
He added that Marwa’s leadership earned him national recognition, including Newswatch magazine’s Nigeria’s Man of the Year 1997 and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). The Alaafin also noted Marwa’s impressive achievements as NDLEA chairman, including the interception and destruction of illicit drugs worth over ₦60 billion within his first six months in office.
The Alaafin prayed for God’s continued protection over the NDLEA chairman and wished him long life, good health, and greater accomplishments as he continues to lead the country’s anti-drug campaign.
