President Bola Tinubu has nominated Ikechukwu Ugwuegede as the South-East representative on the board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Ugwuegede, a former Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) from 2011 to 2015, also contested the Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.
His nomination was contained in a letter from President Tinubu to the Senate, which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Wednesday.
The new appointment follows criticism of the initial list of nominees for the NCC board, earlier forwarded to the Senate, for lacking representation from the South-East geopolitical zone.
Other members of the NCC board previously nominated and confirmed include Idris Olorunnimbe (Chairman, South-West), Aminu Maida (Executive Vice-Chairman, North-West), Abraham Oshadami (Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, North-Central), and Rimini Makama (Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, North-East).
Additional board members are Hajia Maryam Bayi, Col. Abdulwahab Lawal (rtd), Senator Lekan Mustapha (South-West), Chris Okorie (South-South), and Princess Oforitsenere Emiko (Commissioner, South-South).
In his letter, according to TheCable on Thursday, President Tinubu urged the Senate to give prompt consideration to Ugwuegede’s nomination, expressing confidence in the lawmakers’ cooperation.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner, please accept, distinguished senators and distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards,” the president stated.
