Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to advancing girl-child education across Nigeria, describing it as key to the nation’s growth and inclusivity.
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from Plan International, led by the organisation’s director of programme, quality, and innovation, Helen Mfonobong Idiong, the vice president said the government remains focused on expanding access to education for girls through various initiatives, including the school feeding programme.
“We will continue our engagement with Plan International and see where the strength of government can be brought to bear on your solid advice on girl-child education,” Shettima said.
He added that President Tinubu’s administration is “deeply committed to inclusivity and gender equality,” stressing that the government cannot afford to “disenfranchise half of its population and expect to grow as a nation.”
The vice president described First Lady Oluremi Tinubu as “a symbol of how a properly empowered and supported girl-child can blossom into a great leader,” recalling her active contributions to debates on education and gender equality while serving in the Senate.
During the event, Shettima invited Joy Ogah, a teenage advocate selected by Plan International, to symbolically take over his seat as vice president for a day.
From the vice president’s chair, Ogah delivered a passionate address calling for greater investment in girl-child education and protection.
