The motion comes on the heels of the NSIB report on the Air Peace runway incident at Port Harcourt, which occurred on June 22, 2025.
Senator Buhari, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation and Aerospace Development, said though no life was lost in the incident, it is imperative to address the critical gaps in safety standards, infrastructure management and operational compliance within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
He stressed the need for safety in the aviation sector to enhance passengers’ confidence and growth, noting that Nigeria has in recent years witnessed an increase in runway-related incidents, near misses and operational safety challenges.
Contributing, Senators Orji Uzor Kalu and Mohammed Goni reiterated the need for the Ministry of Aviation to sit up and ensure all relevant agencies and airlines comply with safety regulations. They urged the ministry to fast-track the construction of a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Jubrin Barau, while calling for the adoption of the prayers of the motion, thanked Senator Buhari for moving such an important motion.
“It is very important because aviation is an important sector of every economy. We cannot joke with aviation in order not to injure our economy and our people.
“I call on the committee; I know it is headed by someone who is very diligent and reliable, a consummate legislator, and well experienced, who started in the House of Representatives before the Senate. I know he is going to do a good job,” he concluded.
