The Nigerian Senate has received a formal request from President Bola Tinubu seeking the confirmation of Professor Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the President’s letter during Tuesday’s plenary session, alongside other communications from the Presidency seeking legislative approval for various appointments.
President Tinubu’s request follows the approval of Professor Amupitan’s nomination by the National Council of State at its recent meeting in Abuja. The Council, which includes former presidents, governors, and key government officials, endorsed the appointment as part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s electoral process.
According to the President’s letter, the request complies with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which mandate Senate confirmation for appointments to key federal institutions.
The Senate has referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative consideration.
