  • Veteran rapper M.I highlights the role of internet fraudsters in funding Nigeria’s music industry.
  • He views the reliance on fraudulent activities and Western support as a negative reflection on the country.
  • M.I calls for increased efforts to secure legitimate funding for the creative sector in Nigeria.

Veteran rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I, has stated that internet fraudsters contribute significantly to funding Nigeria’s music industry.

He described it as an indictment on the country that most of the industry’s financial support comes from the West and from fraudulent activities, urging that more should be done to provide legitimate funding for the creative sector.

Speaking as a guest on a recent episode of the So Nigerian podcast, M.I said:

“There’s a lot of controversies when people talk about Yahoo Yahoo, because a lot of artists that is the funding that they have. What I’m trying to say is that, it’s an indictment on our country that we have such talented musicians and that the major funding for the industry comes from the West and the fraud industry. It’s an indictment. It shows that something is wrong. Hopefully, we can do better.”

The rapper also appealed to wealthy Nigerians to invest in the country’s musical talents, noting that for now, it is mostly young people financially supporting one another in the industry.
