UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has disclosed that she no longer feels connected to Nigeria.
Speaking on the Rosebud Podcast on Friday, Badenoch said she has not renewed her Nigerian passport since the early 2000s.
While she occasionally keeps up with events in the country, the 45-year-old explained that the UK feels more like home, where she lives with her family and works alongside her political colleagues.
“I have not renewed my Nigerian passport, I think, not since the early 2000s,” Badenoch said.
“I’ve never quite felt that I belonged there.
I don’t identify with it (Nigeria) anymore, most of my life has been in the UK and I’ve just never felt the need to.”
Badenoch was born in Wimbledon, South West London, and later returned to the UK after spending some years in Nigeria, following her parents’ belief that the country lacked promising prospects.
She said:
“I think the reason that I came back here was actually a very sad one, and it was that my parents thought, ‘there is no future for you in this country’.”
