The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center (FEW Center) has issued a fresh alert to Adamawa and eight other northern states over possible flooding.

A circular signed by the Director, Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, on Monday in Abuja, warned that several northern settlements may experience heavy rainfall and flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.

Bokani urged stakeholders on the centre’s platform to provide timely feedback on any emerging situations, noting that Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States had been placed on red alert.

Other states on the list include Sokoto and Zamfara, with Makira and Anka towns specifically highlighted.

Adamawa and Katsina recorded the highest number of towns flagged. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng and Abba-Kumbo were named, while in Katsina, Katsina town, Kaita and Bindawa were listed.

In Jigawa, Gwaram town was identified, while other towns placed on the watchlist include Nafada (Gombe), Ngala (Borno), Sumaila (Kano), Anka (Zamfara) and Makira (Sokoto).

Bauchi State also has Azare and Jama’are on the FEW Center’s watchlist.

The director recalled that just last week, the center had issued additional flood warnings to towns across seven northern states and cautioned that with water levels rising on River Niger, communities along the flood plains from Jebba to Lokoja should evacuate.
