In other news… Chaos erupted at a burial ceremony in Aku, Imo State, after the first son of the deceased allegedly refused to allow his mother’s burial unless he received a form of settlement.
Speaking at the family compound, a retired police officer explained that the late Godwin Nwawere and his wife had a son, Uzoma Nwawere, and several daughters who are now married.
He noted that the daughters had been supportive of their mother but neglected their brother and failed to give him the respect traditionally accorded to a first son.
The retired officer said in Igbo: “Godwin Nwawere, who is the husband of the deceased, has passed on. They had children; Uzoma, who is the first son, and other two, and five daughters, who are married. But the first son was not getting the respect due to a first son. All the daughters, who are married to Mbano men, connived with their mother and started treating the first son in a way that is not right. Now the first son has been the one living at home on ‘credit’ and this pleased the daughters who are all married out.”
According to reports, following their mother’s death, Uzoma allegedly insisted that before she could be buried in the family compound now his by inheritance his married sisters and their husbands (his in-laws) must first “settle” him.
A video from the scene showed a large mound of red earth dug out as the supposed grave, while a crowd gathered around, exchanging heated words despite the cloudy weather and light drizzle.
