Suspended senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday declared that she has officially resumed her legislative duties at the National Assembly following weeks of political uncertainty.
Speaking with Arise News, Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am glad to be alive and to resume work today.”
Her return comes amid heightened anticipation and ongoing controversy over her suspension, which began in March.
NaOver the weekend, the senator announced that she had written to the Senate leadership, notifying them of her decision to return, citing a recent court ruling in her favour.
“I have informed the Senate formally,” she told journalists during a constituency training event.
Earlier on Tuesday, the lawmaker arrived at the National Assembly gate, accompanied by activist Aisha Yesufu, rights advocate Mama P, activist Randy, and a large crowd of supporters. However, they were met by security personnel who denied them entry.
Eyewitnesses said the incident led to a heated confrontation between the group and security officials.
A visibly upset Aisha Yesufu accused the security operatives of overstepping their authority, saying, “National Assembly is meant to be for everyone. Why are you stopping us? We are not abiding doesn’t mean we are cowards.”
The tension rose as some of the senator’s supporters began chanting “Push!” in a bid to breach the barricade. The crowd eventually marched toward the complex, singing solidarity songs in support of Akpoti-Uduaghan.
As of press time, security presence remained heavy at the National Assembly entrance, while the senator’s supporters continued their peaceful demonstration.
