A Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has recommended the criminal prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe for her role in the untimely death of Nigerian music star Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.
Delivering the ruling on Friday, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi concluded that Ogedengbe acted with “gross negligence” by administering an injection without proper medical authorization. While the court ruled out homicide or foul play, it deemed the nurse’s actions as “unlawful and professionally negligent.”
The verdict followed a thorough inquest launched by the Lagos State Government on September 29, 2023, after widespread public concern over the artist’s sudden death. A total of 19 witnesses testified during the proceedings.
Magistrate Shotobi confirmed that Mohbad died within hours of receiving the injection at his home in Lekki. The court found no indication of natural causes, emphasizing that the death stemmed from unauthorized medical intervention.
“In line with Section 29 of the Coroner Laws of Lagos State, this court recommends that the Director of Public Prosecution initiate legal proceedings against Feyisayo Ogedengbe for illegal medical practice and gross negligence,” the magistrate declared.
Beyond the nurse’s culpability, the ruling also criticized systemic failures surrounding Mohbad’s death. The court faulted his father, Joseph Aloba, for conducting a rushed burial without obtaining a death certificate, medical evaluation, or police clearance. While noting that cultural practices may have influenced his actions, the magistrate said they hindered forensic investigations and delayed justice.
The court also questioned the behavior of Mohbad’s partner, Omowunmi, for not taking decisive action during the emergency and burial. Despite her closeness to the late singer, she only became vocal after the incident gained public attention. The magistrate observed that as someone present in his final moments, a stronger and more responsible reaction was expected.
The ruling further addressed police negligence, ordering an investigation into why the Nigeria Police Force failed to act on a petition Mohbad filed before his death. The National Human Rights Commission was also urged to look into alleged harassment and intimidation from both security agencies and figures in the music industry.
While the court did not find direct evidence linking Mohbad’s death to music executive Naira Marley or show promoter Sam Larry, it acknowledged that the artist suffered emotional distress due to sustained bullying and intimidation allegedly involving the two.
In conclusion, Magistrate Shotobi issued a broad indictment of those closest to Mohbad, stating that his family, friends, the police, and the music industry all contributed to the unsafe environment that surrounded him, especially in his final days.
