The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed Abdulkarim Kana, a former national legal adviser, as the party’s deputy national secretary, while Murtala Kogiya from Katsina State is the new national legal adviser.
The ruling APC announced new appointments to key positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), following a zoning realignment approved at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
The changes were part of a motion moved by Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).
According to Uzodimma, the new changes reflected the APC’s commitment to fairness and internal equity.
“It will be a thing of joy for me to take advantage of this moment to drive this composite motion,” Uzodimma said while addressing NEC members.
“The office of the national legal adviser should be zoned from the north-central to the north-west geopolitical zone, while the deputy national secretary position, already zoned to the north-central, should remain in the region.”
The motion by the Imo State Governor included a call for the extension of the tenure of ward, Local Government (LG), state, and zonal executives of the ruling party until December 31, 2025.
According to Uzodimma, he made the call due to the compressed political calendar of the APC and the need for stability.
“I so move,” Uzodimma declared, before inviting Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, to second the motion.
Abbas endorsed the proposal, saying: “I hereby second the following motions… including the filling of offices of the deputy national secretary and the national legal adviser in accordance with the new zoning arrangements”
The appointments of Kana as deputy national secretary and Kogiya as legal adviser followed the earlier appointment of Nentawe Yilwatda, former APC governorship candidate in Plateau State, as the party’s new national chairman.
