The Labour Party (LP) has declared open its 2027 presidential ticket to all Nigerians, warning that aspirants would be picked on merit.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday. Abayomi Arabambi, the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, stated that the party is determined to follow due process by organising primary elections for its members.
“There shall be primary elections in the Labour Party, and no aspirant will be favoured this time around,” Arabambi declared.
Arabambi described the selection of Peter Obi in 2023 as a blunder with lasting consequences, insisting that the party is set to correct its mistake ahead of 2027.
It would be recalled that Peter Obi emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and emerged third in the election with victory in 12 states, including the federal capital territory.
However, Arabambi questioned Obi’s loyalty towards the party after he recently joined the coalition movement under the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Arabambi also dismissed the coalition actors, describing them as “Yahoo Yahoo politicians” who brought hardship in 2015.
“Instead of a leader with debt and discipline and demonstrable progress for national renewal, Nigeria got a populist, whose greatest skill is telling people what they want to hear. The 2027 election must not repeat this error, even as Peter Obi has ported from Labour Party to ADC.
“Nigerians are wishing him well in that ungodly coalition because these are the same coalition that brought catastrophe on Nigerians between 2015 and 2023. Such a coalition must be rejected.
“We wish Obi well in his Yahoo Yahoo coalition, but to let him know that the Labour Party presidential ticket is now open to all Nigerians.
“There shall be a primary election this time around, and no aspirant would be favoured,” Arabambi said.
