Renowned highlife musician and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at the age of 95. He died on Friday evening around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.

The news of his death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha.

Ejeagha, often referred to as a cultural treasure, was celebrated for his unique ability to blend Igbo folklore, proverbs, and life lessons into compelling musical narratives. His storytelling style, deeply rooted in traditional values and native wisdom, earned him admiration across multiple generations.

In the 1980s, his voice and compositions became a staple on Nigerian radio, where his songs not only entertained but also educated listeners through parables and philosophical themes.

His influence resurfaced in 2024 when one of his songs was revived through a viral dance challenge, “Gwo Gwo Gwo,” popularized by skit maker Brain Jotter. The trend brought renewed attention to his timeless artistry among younger audiences.

Mike Ejeagha’s death marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues to live on through his music, which remains a cornerstone of Nigerian highlife and folklore traditions.
