Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), has publicly reacted to the sentencing of Olukeye Adedayo, a man convicted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for stealing N71,000.
In a recent video, VDM expressed deep dissatisfaction with what he described as a grossly unfair punishment Adedayo received a staggering 76-year prison term. He questioned the logic behind such harsh sentencing for a minor theft while influential politicians accused of embezzling billions remain untouched.
VDM strongly criticized the EFCC, asserting that in the past eight years, no prominent political figure has been held accountable for large-scale corruption. He accused the commission of failing in its responsibilities and turning a blind eye to high-profile crimes. Referring to the agency sarcastically as “Kidder FC,” he suggested its priorities were misplaced and even joked about the possibility of being re-arrested for his comments.
He went on to reference unresolved corruption issues involving marketers in Anambra State and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), lamenting that such cases have been left unaddressed. VDM also mentioned the long-standing allegations against former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, suggesting the matter had been conveniently forgotten.
Speaking further, the activist described Nigeria’s judiciary as dysfunctional. He highlighted the dire situation at Kuje prison, where approximately 700 inmates remain in prolonged detention without trial. According to VDM, many Nigerians are forced to pay bribes to delay or manipulate legal proceedings a clear indication, he said, of a system failing its people.
VDM argued that if justice in Nigeria were truly functional, activists like him wouldn’t be needed to advocate for fair treatment and accountability.
His comments follow his recent brush with the EFCC. He was reported missing by his friend, Dkokopee, only for it to later emerge that he had been detained by the anti-graft agency. Following intense public pressure, he was released, and his fans celebrated his return online. Observers noted changes in his physical condition post-release, with some celebrities alleging he had been mistreated during his detention. Others condemned what they described as his unlawful arrest and detention.
