- D’banj and Don Jazzy intentionally created a narrative positioning him as the silent force behind the movement, despite being equal partners.
Popular Nigerian artist D’banj has shed light on the strategy behind the rise of the iconic Mo’Hits Records, revealing how deliberate branding helped shape the public’s perception of the label and its founders.
In a recent interview, the Afrobeats star shared that many Nigerians once believed Don Jazzy was his boss, when in reality, they co-owned the label equally. According to D’banj, this perception was not by accident it was a carefully crafted narrative designed to elevate the brand and command public intrigue.
D’banj explained that despite the label’s achievements at the time, Mo’Hits Records was often overlooked during award seasons. To change that, he and Don Jazzy decided to introduce an element of mystique. Don Jazzy took on the role of the silent, powerful figure, while D’banj played the front-facing star.
“We were the only label heads who were also the artists and producers. So we needed people to fear us,” D’banj said.
He added humorously, Every time I whispered in his ear on stage, we weren’t saying anything. It was branding. We trusted each other enough to play our roles. Jazzy didn’t need to talk, his presence said everything.”
Recalling one pivotal moment, D’banj spoke about when he publicly prostrated before Don Jazzy in front of top political figures and elites in Lagos. That gesture, he said, solidified the public belief that Don Jazzy had signed him.
“I bowed down to him publicly on purpose. That moment changed everything. People started thinking he signed me. They didn’t know it was a 50-50 partnership,” he clarified.
D’banj concluded by emphasizing that the success of Mo’Hits wasn’t just about music—it was also about smart branding and mutual trust between two visionary creatives.
