  • Timaya, a prominent Nigerian musician, discussed the financial aspects of his early albums in a recent interview.
  • His debut album was sold for ₦500,000 to a marketer in Alaba market, which he considered a significant achievement at the time.

Nigerian music icon Timaya has opened up about the financial journey behind his early albums, revealing how those initial deals played a crucial role in shaping his music career.

In a recent interview with Okay Africa, Timaya shared that his debut album was sold for ₦500,000 to a marketer in the famous Alaba market. Though the amount may seem small today, the singer described it as a big win at the time, considering it marked his official entry into the music industry. The album’s success surprised many, leading the marketer to increase his investment in response to its growing popularity.

Timaya’s second album marked a turning point, drawing far more attention from music distributors. He recalled that one marketer offered ₦10 million for the rights, but a better offer soon followed. A company known as Abu Ventures stepped in and ultimately sealed the deal at ₦24 million.

These early financial deals not only provided Timaya with the resources to grow his brand but also demonstrated his rising value in the Nigerian music scene. Reflecting on those moments, he emphasized how far he has come since those foundational deals.

He said: “He gave me 7 million naira for the music video, paid for the videos, and even bought me a car. He called me a good market,”

“I was been priced at 10 million by the first marketer, then Abu Ventures came and offered to buy the album. He ended up paying 24 million for the album. At that point, only 2Baba, P-Square, and D’banj were paid that kind of money”
