  • Nigerian music star Seyi Shay sparks debate on church music and its potential negative impact on home decor.
  • Singer quit her former church due to the songs they were singing, not doctrine or drama.

Nigerian singer and songwriter Seyi Shay is raising eyebrows and sparking a conversation about the songs we sing in church—and whether they truly uplift the spirit or perpetuate a painful legacy.

In a recent Instagram story, the music star revealed the reason she stopped attending her former church, and it had nothing to do with sermons or church drama. Instead, she took issue with the songs being sung during worship.

Seyi Shay explained that a leader in her previous church discouraged the use of modern gospel music, insisting that only hymns and scriptural songs be used in services. That was a turning point for her.

“I stopped going to that church. PERIODT,” she wrote.

She went on to question how worshippers could feel “blessed and happy” singing hymns that, according to her, were composed by slave owners and imposed on enslaved Africans during horrific acts of torture and dehumanization.

“Makes no sense,” she added. “Do your research! Ignorance is NOT Godly!”

Although she clarified that not all hymns share this disturbing origin, Seyi Shay emphasized that many do, and encouraged believers to create their own praise and worship songs rooted in scripture instead of relying solely on traditional hymns with colonial roots.

Her comments have sparked mixed reactions. While some worshippers defend the emotional and spiritual power of hymns, others commend Seyi Shay for encouraging a deeper look at the historical and cultural significance of church music.
