Popular Nigerian fashion designer, Seyi Adekunle—better known as Seyi Vodi—has responded to those casting doubt on the source of his wealth following the unveiling of his high-tech, multi-billion naira fashion workshop.
Having styled numerous celebrities including Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, K1, Portable, and 2Baba, Vodi took to social media to share insights into his journey, emphasizing that his achievements stem from over two decades of consistent effort.
In his post, the 50-year-old entrepreneur highlighted that his success has come through “24 years of grit, passion, and relentless hard work,” stating that there is no mystery behind his accomplishments.
Drawing a comparison between himself and internationally acclaimed German designer Philipp Plein, Vodi noted that Plein began his brand in 1998—just three years before Vodi launched his own in Nigeria. Despite Plein’s billionaire status and global recognition, Vodi pointed out that no one questions how he made his money.
He wrote:
“My name is Seyi Adekunle Vodi. I’ll be 50 in July. I started Vodi just three years after Philipp Plein began his own fashion empire. While I’ve done extraordinarily well for myself, in the context of the world, there is no big deal about my numbers and successes.”
Vodi expressed frustration over the skepticism that often trails successful individuals in Nigeria. He believes this attitude is fueled by poverty and a lack of exposure to global success stories.
He stated:
“I’ve heard people ask, ‘Is it only fashion that is giving him all this money?’ They ask from a place of want, lack, penury, ignorance, and excruciating poverty… If our society was one where people generally prospered, we wouldn’t be so hateful and suspicious of success.”
According to Vodi, while global entrepreneurs are celebrated, Nigerians often tear down their own.
