The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), a prominent figure on social media. The arrest comes amid widespread online speculation and public curiosity about the reason behind his detention.
On Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale spoke with BBC News Pidgin, revealing that the commission apprehended the social media activist following several complaints filed by various individuals.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale stated.
While rumors online linked the arrest to a potential dispute involving Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Oyewale dismissed any specific connection, noting that the complaints originated from multiple sources. He emphasized that the EFCC’s primary responsibility is to investigate all credible petitions while protecting the identities of those who come forward.
When asked directly about GTB, he responded, “The petitions came from various individuals,” and reinforced the agency’s role by adding, “We are responsible for protecting them.”
Oyewale further disclosed that the EFCC is currently peparing to formally charge Otse in court. He reassured the public that all actions are being taken in accordance with the law.
“We will release him when he meets the bail conditions and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding,” he said.
VeryDarkMan, known for his bold and often controversial social commentary online, has a significant following and is no stranger to public debates.
