A high-level opposition meeting aimed at forming a coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was disrupted on Sunday by a group of unruly delegates in Abuja.
The meeting, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, brought together prominent figures including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, among other opposition leaders.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment tensions flared as delegates engaged in heated arguments, resulting in chaos inside the hall.
A crowd of agitated delegates swarmed the podium, shouting over each other in a disorderly confrontation.
According to Punch, the commotion began when Babachir Lawal announced a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State, a move that was immediately rejected by other Jigawa delegates.
They stormed the stage, insisting they had not authorized the individual and would not be represented by him.
The scene grew more chaotic until police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) intervened to restore order.
Security personnel swiftly shielded the key political figures present, ensuring their safety amid the disturbance.
Once calm was restored, Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, and another delegate were selected to represent the state in the ongoing discussions.
