  • The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has banned Nigerian radio and television stations from playing the popular song “Tell Your Papa” by veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem, citing breaches of broadcast decency standards.
  • Despite the song’s popularity and discussions on social media, the NBC insists that its lyrics do not align with responsible broadcasting standards.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has officially banned Nigerian radio and TV stations from broadcasting the trending song “Tell Your Papa” by veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem, citing violations of broadcast decency.

In a memo dated April 9, 2025, signed by Susan Obi, the Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, the commission categorized the song as Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB) under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. This section prohibits airing content that is deemed “inappropriate, offensive, or contrary to public decency.”

The memo stated, “The National Broadcasting Commission has identified the song ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem, currently trending on social media, as content deemed inappropriate for broadcast due to its objectionable nature,

Although the song has gained significant attention and sparked debate on social media, the NBC asserts that its lyrical content fails to meet responsible broadcasting standards.

The memo, titled ““Restriction on Broadcasting ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem”urged all broadcast stations to refrain from airing the song in order to maintain ethical broadcasting standards.

“Your cooperation and commitment to upholding responsible broadcasting standards is greatly appreciated,” the commission noted.
