Andrew Torhile Uchi, a personal assistant to George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has spent days at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged N10 billion monney laundering scam.
A source at the anti-graft agency confirmed the development to The Witness on Sunday
Earlier reports suggested that Uchi is assisting the anti-graft agency with an inquiry into allegations of corruption, bribery, and money laundering involving an estimated N10 billion.
However, one source indicated that the amount could be higher or lower than initially reported, with the EFCC continuing to question him.
According to sources, Uchi has been in EFCC custody since Monday, March 10, 2025, following an invitation linked to a petition detailing properties he allegedly acquired in Abuja, Jos (Plateau State), Makurdi, Gboko, and Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, valued at over N6 billion.
Reports have also revealed that two Bureau de Change operators are under investigation for their alleged role in the money laundering activities, with many of the funds traced to transactions linked to these companies.
Further findings from the EFCC’s investigation suggest that over N1.6 billion was used to purchase luxury vehicles through four different banks in less than two years.
In response to earlier media reports, Barr. Joseph Adejoh, counsel and media aide to Andrew Torhile Uchi, urged the public to disregard the information.
Attempts to contact EFCC spokesperson, Mr. Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful.
