Enyimba FC has confirmed that former Super Eagles star Finidi George will take charge of the Nigerian national team for their upcoming international friendly matches against Ghana and Mali, as reported by Soccernet.ng.
Following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, the coaching position for the Super Eagles became vacant.
Reports had suggested that the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation might step in as an interim boss, along with the former Ajax winger.
However, Enyimba FC’s official website has now confirmed that Finidi, currently the manager of the club, will temporarily step away from his role to lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming clashes against Ghana and Mali.
The 52-year-old coach was one of the longest-standing assistants to Peseiro, spending 22 months alongside the Portuguese coach. His familiarity with the team is seen as an advantage ahead of the Ghana and Mali fixtures.
The Super Eagles have already begun preparations for the matches, opening their camp in Marakech, Morocco. Ten players have been confirmed to have arrived at the camp.
Nigeria is set to renew their historic rivalry with Ghana on March 22nd, followed by a match against Mali on March 26th.
