Wizkid, a prominent figure in Nigerian music, recently took to Instagram to express his discontent with being labeled solely as an Afrobeats artist, sparked reactions from fellow industry professionals.
In a series of posts on his Instastories on Friday night, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer announced his new album titled ‘Morayo’.
The ‘Ojuelegba’ hitmaker, however, warned the public that the project is not for Afrobeats lovers— including fans of ‘Pakurumo’, his 2011 hit song.
The singer also denounced the music genre while asking his followers not to refer to him as an “Afrobeats artiste”.
He wrote;
“Album name ‘Morayo’ best I ever made. I am not an Afrobeats artistes. Don’t call me that,” he wrote.
“If you like Afrobeats please don’t download my album, I’m not Afro anything.
“And please if you like ‘Pakuromo’ Wizkid, don’t like this album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and life.”
Wizkid’s post indeed stirred reactions from other Nigerian celebrities, including Tunde Ednut, who expressed surprise at Wizkid’s stance. Tunde reiterated the significance of Afrobeats and its enduring connection to Nigerian culture.
Tunde wished Wizkid success with his upcoming album and vowed to support it by downloading it if it meets his expectations.
