THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a nationwide strike beginning next Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
The agreement was reached by the leadership of the two unions following an atypical National Executive Council meeting today in Abuja.
According to the two major labor unions, nationwide mobilization of members and allies has begun immediately.
The labor leaders today, November 7, 2023 convened in Abuja.
The strike by the Organized Labour is in response to the horrific assault on NLC National President Joe Ajaero last week in Imo State.
The Organised Labour had expressed widespread indignation, accusing the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, of participation in the recent attack on Ajaero in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The Organised Labour gave the Federal Government a five-day deadline to replace the police commissioner, while also blaming the attack on Ajaero on Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is running for re-election, but the governor has since stated that he had no role in the attack on the labour leader.
Organised Labour also sought the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, threatening a statewide strike if their demands were not met.
