Louisiana (KLFY) – Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins is making new moves to support the Louisiana shrimp industry’s fight against imported shrimp.
For years, the Louisiana shrimp industry was overwhelmed by cheaper imports from various countries.

To counteract this, Congressman Higgins wants to propose legislation that would ensure seafood brought into the country meets all of our country’s legal standards before it is distributed.

American Strategic Partners’ Brian Shinault said there is a big problem that the majority of the shrimp that come in and are imported are not controlled.
“It’s also a safety issue for consumers, so we support it,” Shinault said. “We will use Congress to support this bill.”
Congressman Higgins reintroduced the Imported Seafood Safety Standards Act to address the problem of foreign dumping taking over our country’s seafood market.
Shinault said his team wants this to be passed to ensure foreign seafood product inspections are the same for all traders.
“The bottom line is that all food coming into the United States or Louisiana must be controlled. We don’t know where it comes from, what additives can be added to the food,” Shinault said.

Shinault recognized the importance of the shrimp industry to the Louisiana economy. He said he is pushing for the law to help local shrimp fishermen compete with imported products.
“All we are asking for is a level playing field, and we believe this bill will play a significant role in creating and maintaining that,” Shinault said.
The Imported Shrimp and Safety Standards Act will be discussed Wednesday at the Louisiana Shrimp Task Force meeting in Raceland, Louisiana.
